ASTM G62 Standard Test Methods for Detection of Voids in Pipeline Coatings

Method A is designed to detect voids, such as pinholes and voids, in thin-film coatings 100 to 0,025 mm (0,254 to 1 mil) thick, using normal tap water and an applied voltage of less than 10 V dc. It is effective in films up to 0,508 mm (20 mil) thick, when wetting with water is used.

However, it should be noted that this method will not detect fine points in the coating. This can be considered a non-destructive test due to the relatively low voltage.

Method B is designed to detect voids such as pinholes and voids in pipeline linings; however, it can also be used to detect fine points in the coating due to the higher voltages applied. This method can be used for pipeline lining of any thickness and uses applied voltages between 900 and 20 000 V dc. This method is considered destructive because the high voltages involved often destroy the coating in fine spots.

Values ​​specified in SI units up to three significant decimal places should be considered standard.
