Insulation Against Heat (ISO 20344, §5.12)

The ISO 20344 standard has been published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to describe the properties and test methods of protective footwear. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 20344 Personal protective equipment - Test methods for footwear.

Insulation Against Heat (ISO 20344, §5.12)

This standard describes the procedures for testing individual components of safety shoes, safety shoes and occupational footwear, rather than testing them as whole. In this respect, it discloses a large number of methods for testing shoes of personal protective equipment.

Among the test methods in the standard that are valid for all protective shoes, clause 5.12 is for determining the insulation properties against heat.

Clause 5.12 of the said standard is arranged as follows:

  • 5.12 Determination of heat insulation
  • 5.12.1 Apparatus
  • 5.12.2 Preparation of the test piece
  • 5.12.3 Test procedure

In the tests for insulation against heat in advanced laboratories, the shoes are subjected to a sand bath with a certain temperature and then the change in the temperature inside the shoe is determined. These tests are generally carried out for quality control purposes and possible errors in production systems are determined.

Foot protection products must also carry some safety signs. These signs are a visual reminder of the need to use foot and leg personal protective equipment in work environments. These are necessary to protect against a range of potential hazards such as wet surfaces, slippery surfaces, cuts and holes, falling objects, metal and chemical splash, abrasion, and electrostatic buildup. Signs indicate the need to use suitable footwear and where they are used. Mandatory safety signs, are included in related standards.

Our organization also provides thermal insulation testing services (ISO 20344, §5.12) within the framework of foot protection equipment testing services.
