ISO 13287 Personal Protective Equipment, Footwear, Test Method for Slip Resistance

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 13287 testing. The EN ISO 13287 standard, which describes the requirements and test methods for shoe slip resistance, is actually a European standard and has been republished by the International Standards Organization (ISO).

ISO 13287 Personal Protective Equipment, Footwear, Test Method for Slip Resistance

Testing and evaluation of anti-slip properties in shoes is of great importance in terms of preventing slip accidents. Many different methods and devices have been developed over the years to measure the slip resistance of upholstery and shoes.

Various test methods and grading systems have been adopted in different European countries. However, since these test methods are based on different principles and used under different conditions, no unity has been achieved between them. Each of them has its own advantages and has flaws and none are perfect test methods.

In this respect, the ISO 13287 standard fills an important gap. While applying this international standard, which describes the method of measuring the slip resistance of shoes, the shoe material to be tested is placed on a ceramic tile or steel floor and subjected to a certain normal force, allowing it to move horizontally with respect to the surface.

Meanwhile, the glycerin or sodium lauryl sulfate solution applied to the surface acts as a contaminant. During the test, the friction force is measured and the dynamic friction coefficient is calculated. Depending on the test conditions, the friction coefficients must meet the following requirements in the EN 20345 standard:

  • Forward heel slip, ceramic tile floor with sodium lauryl sulfate solution;
  • Forward flat sliding, ceramic tile floor with sodium lauryl sulfate solution;
  • Forward heel slip, glycerin steel floor;
  • Forward flat glide, glycerin steel floor.
