Insulation Against Cold (ISO 20344, §5.13)

The ISO 20344 standard has been published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to describe the characteristics and test methods of protective footwear, which are among the main personal protective equipment. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 20344 Personal protective equipment - Test methods for footwear.

Insulation Against Cold (ISO 20344, §5.13)

This standard describes the procedures for testing safety shoes, safety shoes and occupational footwear individually, rather than testing them as a whole. In this respect, it describes a large number of methods for testing shoes that are of personal protective equipment. In general, there are 17 test methods within the scope of the standard.

Among the test methods in the standard that are valid for all protective shoes, clause 5.13 is aimed at determining the insulation properties against cold.

Clause 5.13 of the said standard is arranged as follows:

  • 5.13 Determination of insulation against cold
  • 5.13.1 Device
  • 5.13.2 Preparation of the test piece
  • 5.13.3 Test procedure

In tests of insulation against cold in advanced laboratories, shoes are kept in a refrigerator at minus 17 degrees for 30 minutes and then the change in temperature inside the shoe is determined. These tests are generally carried out for quality control purposes and possible errors in production systems are determined.

Protective shoes are considered in two categories depending on the material used in production. First category shoes, made of leather and other materials and made entirely of rubber or polymeric materials shoes. The second category of shoes are shoes entirely made of rubber, eg fully vulcanized, or fully polymeric, eg fully molded.

Within the scope of foot protection equipment testing services, our organization also provides testing services for the determination of the insulation against cold (ISO 20344, §5.13).
