This standard specifies a test method for determining the qualitative and quantitative presence of phthalate compounds in shoes and footwear components.
The test piece consists of a single material from the shoe such as coated leather, textile, polymer, coated material or others. Sample preparation should include removing individual materials from the shoe. To avoid cross contamination, the cutting device should be cleaned with acetone after cutting any material.
Up to three test specimens of equal mass and the same material type may be tested together, taking into account the measurement limit and the limit given by applicable regulations.
From the calibration plot, determine the content of each phthalate corrected for the internal standard peak area and enter the phthalate concentration in µg/ml, correcting for any dilution. Subtract the blank concentration from the sample concentration.
Depending on this decision, the standard stock solution for each phthalate will be available as certified mixtures commercially available, individual components in solution, or self-prepared individual standard stock solutions for each phthalate in toluene.
The results of the determined phthalates are added to give the result of the total. If the result for a single phthalate is less than the measurement limit of the test method, this result is considered zero and is not included in the total.
