ANSI Z89.1 Industrial Head Protective Helmets

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ANSI Z89.1 standard. Developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the ANSI Z89.1 standard provides performance and testing requirements for industrial helmets, commonly known as hard hats. It creates the types and classes of protective helmets depending on the type of danger encountered. It includes specifications for helmets designed to provide side-impact or top-impact protection only, giving employers and users the flexibility to specify the helmet that best meets the needs of specific workplaces.

ANSI Z89.1 Endüstriyel Kafa Koruyucu Kasklar

ANSI Z89.1 was prepared by members of ISEA's Chief Protection Group as a revision to ANSI Z89.1-2009 and was approved by a consensus review panel of users, government agencies, and security experts.

Industrial head protection helmets that meet the requirements of this standard are classified as Type I for top protection or Type II for lateral impact protection. Both types are tested for impact attenuation and penetration resistance. Type II helmet performance requirements include criteria for impact energy attenuation from front, rear and side and overhead impacts; off-center penetration resistance and chin strap retention.

Indicates the electrical insulation rating of three classes of helmets. Class G (general) helmets are tested at 2200 volts, Class E (electric) to withstand 20.000 volts and do not provide Class C (conductive) electrical protection.

Helmets conforming to the requirements of this standard are described in both type (depending on where the impact force is located) and class (according to electrical insulation). However, it does not cover helmets, firefighting helmets or head protection devices used in recreational areas. Warnings and recommendations regarding the use and maintenance of helmets are included in the annex of the standard.

The purpose of this standard is to specify minimum performance requirements for protective helmets that reduce impact and penetration forces and provide protection from electric shock. The test methods described in the ANSI Z89.1 standard are:

  • flammability
  • Force transmission
  • Apex penetration
  • Impact energy weakening
  • Decentral penetration
  • Chin strap retention (Type II only)
  • Electrical insulation
  • High visibility test
