Neck injury protectors are needed to reduce the risk of direct neck injury from contact with a hockey skate blade.
The tests required to ensure that a neck injury protector complies with the requirements of this document do not attempt to predict the performance of the neck guard in all possible situations. This standard does not address protection from the impact of discs, sticks or other objects.
The purpose of neck injury protection is to reduce the frequency and severity of neck injuries while playing ice hockey. The protective function is such that puncture of a skate blade is prevented.
The neck tear protection for use in ice hockey consists of a neck tear protector. To achieve the performance it can do and provide stability in the neck, a neck tear protector should fit as tightly as possible, consistent with comfort. During use, it is important that the neck tear protector is securely fastened according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Ice hockey is a sport with a risk of injury. This standard is prepared for neck injury protectors used for ice hockey only. Ice hockey neck injury protectors do not protect against impact to the neck or spine and do not protect against axial compressive loading of the cervical spine. Serious head, brain or spinal cord injuries, including paralysis or death, can occur even if an ice hockey neck tear protector that meets the requirements of this standard is used.
The neck tear protector should be visually or manually inspected to determine that there are no items that could injure the user or another player during normal use. The documentation provided by the manufacturer will examine whether the claim that the materials are suitable for use in ice hockey protective clothing and equipment is justified. If the documentation is deemed insufficient, the model will not be tested.
