The EN 812 standard describes the physical and performance and marking requirements for industrial impact caps and presents test methods. Unlike industrial helmets, anti-impact hoods are only designed to protect the wearer from static objects, for example walking under low ceilings or hanging obstacles.
Therefore, impact tests are performed similarly to those required for industrial helmets. However, a lower energy level is used. For example, a weight of 250 kg from a height of 5 mm is dropped onto the helmet with the highest allowable force. In order to reflect the true nature of a possible impact during use, impacts are typically performed at the front and back of the helmet at 30 and 60 degrees inclination. While performing these tests, conditions such as high temperature, low temperature, water immersion and ultraviolet aging are tested on the helmet sample.
Helmets used in industry against impacts are intended to provide protection against sharp or pointed objects. Therefore, penetration tests are also carried out on the helmets.
This test method is also based on a method similar to the shock absorption test. As with shock absorption, penetration testing in the EN 812 standard is performed at a lower energy than that specified in the EN 397 standard to reflect the nature of the hazards. As in the impact test, conditions such as high temperature, low temperature, water immersion and ultraviolet aging are tested on the helmet sample.
Many specifications for protective helmets contain a number of requirements for a helmet design in addition to specific performance requirements. These generally include both the coverage provided by the helmet and the field of view provided to the user. In addition, helmets cover a range of ergonomics and safety-based requirements.
