Head Protection Equipment Tests

Helmets, Powertrain (ANSI Z89.1)

The ANSI Z89.1-14 standard, developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), describes the power transmission characteristics and test methods for helmets. The full name of this standard published in 2014 is as follows: American national standard for industrial head protection.

Helmets, Powertrain (ANSI Z89.1)

This standard describes the types, classification, test methods and performance requirements of protective helmets. These are recommended safety requirements for the authorities drafting legal regulations on the use of protective helmets.

This standard describes the minimum performance and labeling requirements for protective helmets used in industrial and occupational working environments under normal temperature conditions and optionally at high and low temperatures and when worn in the reverse position. It also includes requirements for high visibility helmets. It also describes test methods to evaluate all these requirements.

Helmets conforming to the requirements of this standard are described in both type (depending on where the impact force is located) and class (according to electrical insulation). However, it does not cover helmets, firefighting helmets or head protection devices used in recreational areas. Warnings and recommendations regarding the use and maintenance of helmets are included in the annex of the standard.

The test methods described in the ANSI Z89.1-14 standard are:

  • flammability
  • Force transmission
  • Apex penetration
  • Impact energy weakening
  • Decentral penetration
  • Chin strap retention (type II only)
  • Electrical insulation
  • High visibility test

The purpose of this standard is to set the minimum performance requirements for protective helmets that reduce impact and penetration forces and provide protection from electric shock.i.

Protective helmets reduce the amount of force from an impact, but cannot provide full head protection from severe impact and penetration. Helmets meeting this standard provide only limited protection.

Our organization also provides helmets, power transfer (ANSI Z89.1) testing services within the framework of head protection equipment testing services.
