Most specifications for protective helmets contain a number of requirements for the design of a helmet in addition to specific performance requirements. These generally include the coverage area provided by the helmet as well as the field of view provided to the wearer. It also covers ergonomics and safety-based requirements, such as the space between the head and the helmet, especially in industrial helmets.
Helmets are only protective when held on the head, so a chin strap is required to ensure that they are held in typical operating conditions. The EN 397 standard requires the helmet to be equipped with a chin strap, ie fixing points. These chin straps should have a minimum width of 10 mm and be attached to the helmet when not stretched.
In the method of measuring the chin strap abutment force described in the EN 397 standard, the helmet is mounted to a suitable size head shape and the chin strap is attached to an artificial chin. A tensile force is then applied to the artificial jaw.
Helmets are personal protective equipment designed to protect the wearer from various dangers. In the impact tests applied, a fixed head form with a falling mass striker is used. The tested helmet is placed in a suitably sized and sized head form mounted on a hard base and the striker is dropped from a certain height onto the helmet. The force transmitted from the helmet is measured and evaluated using the load cell under the headform.
