EPA 3540C Standard Test for the Soxhlet Extraction Process

This method is applicable for isolation and concentration in water-insoluble and small amount. Use of this method is limited by or under the supervision of trained analysts. Each analyst must demonstrate the ability to produce acceptable results with this method.

The solid sample is mixed with anhydrous sodium sulfate, placed in an extraction thimble or between two glass wool stoppers, and extracted using a suitable solvent in a Soxhlet extractor.

Reagent grade inorganic chemicals will be used in all tests. Unless otherwise noted, all reagents are intended to meet the specifications of the Analytical Committee. American Chemical Society reagents for which such specifications are available. Other grades may be used provided the reagent has been determined to be of sufficiently high purity first.
