ISO 9022-7 specifies methods for environmental testing of optical devices, including additional assemblies from other fields (e.g. mechanical, chemical and electronic devices), under equivalent conditions for their ability to resist the impact of dripping or rain.
The purpose of the test is to investigate to what extent the optical, climatic, mechanical, chemical and electrical (including electrostatic) performance properties of the sample are affected by dripping or rain. Contamination of dripping or rainwater by airborne impurities should be ignored for the purposes of ISO 9022-7.
At the beginning of exposure, the temperature of the water should be below the temperature of the sample. During exposure, the sample should be mounted in possible working positions on a turntable that rotates around its axis perpendicular to the sprinkler area at a speed of 1 rpm to 2 rpm. Prior to testing, the required rain or drip rate should be measured and set at the center of the sprinkler area covered by the sample.
Unless specified in the relevant specification, the surface of the sample shall be suitably cleaned before exposure. For this purpose, only neutral cleaning agents that do not leave a film on the sample or damage the surface of the sample will be used. After cleaning, the sample must be returned to service (e.g. by applying protective grease).
After recovery, the internal optical surfaces of the sample may show a moisture film. This situation will disappear within the period specified in the relevant specification. If penetrating water cannot be detected by visual inspection, the method for examining whether moisture has penetrated will be specified in the relevant specification.
