EPA 200.7 Standard Test for Determination of Elements in Water and Waste by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of EPA 200.7 standard. This method identifies 31 analytes for the measurement of total recoverable analytes in the dissolved fraction of aqueous samples and in water, wastewater and solid wastes.

EPA 200.7 Standard Test for Determination of Elements in Water and Waste by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry

Total recoverable determination data for aqueous samples should be reported as total (dissolved + suspended fractions) metal data.

Except for the determination of dissolved analytes, aqueous samples are acid protected before sample processing. For the analysis of dissolved analytes, an acidified portion of the filtrate is directly analyzed. To determine the total recoverable analytes in aqueous samples containing particulate material as well as solid wastes, the samples are acid pretreated with nitric and hydrochloric acids and lightly refluxed prior to analysis.

The method involves multi-element determination using sequential or simultaneous means. The devices measure characteristic atomic line emission spectra with optical spectrometry. The sample solutions are nebulized and the resulting aerosol is transported to the plasma torch.

Element-specific emission spectra are produced by a radio frequency inductively coupled plasma. The spectra are dispersed by a grating spectrometer and the intensities of the lines are monitored at specific wavelengths by a photosensitive device.

The light streams from the photosensitive device are processed and controlled by a computer system. A background correction technique is required to compensate for the variable background contribution to the determination of the analytes.
