This rapid method is assumed to be applied in situ to obtain qualitative or semi-quantitative data that aids decisions regarding further sampling strategies for assessing soil quality. The higher the pretreatment efforts used in soil samples, the better the analytical results can be expected.
As applicability depends on the performance of the apparatus and the purpose of the scanning, EN ISO 13196 does not explicitly specify what it is applicable to. The elements that can be determined are limited by the performance of the instruments used, the concentration of the element in the soil, and the requirements of the study (eg guideline value).
For Hg, Cd, Co, Mo, V and Sb, most of the tools are not sensitive enough to reach quantitation limits (LOQ) low enough to meet the requirements (limit or threshold values) set in different countries' regulations. In this case, other methods must be used to measure these low concentrations.
Generally, wet chemical methods based on aqua regia extracts are used in conjunction with optical or mass spectrometric (MS) methods such as atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), inductively coupled plasma/optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES), or ICP/MS.
