International Standards IS0 8501, IS0 8502 and IS0 8503 are prepared to provide methods for assessing these factors, while IS0 8504 provides guidance on the preparation methods available for cleaning steel surfaces, demonstrating the abilities of each to achieve specified levels of cleanliness.
These International Standards do not contain recommendations for protective coating systems to be applied to steel surfaces. Although surface quality can have a direct impact on the selection and performance of the protective coating to be applied, it does not contain recommendations on surface quality requirements for specific situations. Such recommendations are also found in other documents, such as national standards and codes of practice.
It is important to avoid imposing unnecessarily stringent limits when determining the maximum allowable amount of surface contamination due to soluble iron corrosion products. Lower limits are only suitable for marine or similar aggressive environments. A requirement for extremely low pollution levels would be very costly and disproportionate to the benefits to be achieved in many rural and non-industrial inland areas.
