ISO 9022-12 specifies methods for environmental testing of optical devices, including additional assemblies from other fields (e.g. mechanical, chemical and electronic devices), under equivalent conditions for their ability to resist the influence of contamination (e.g. contact).
However, complete tools or assemblies are only tested in exceptional cases as specified in ISO 9022-12. Normally, representative samples, such as material elements or surface coatings on representative substrates, are used for testing.
The tests described in ISO 9022-12 are designed for the selection of materials and components for devices likely to be subject to contamination during their service life, rather than for regular production control.
The purpose of the test is to investigate the resistance of a device, and in particular device surfaces, coatings or synthetic materials, to short-term exposure to test substances.
The manufacturer strives to ensure that the devices withstand the possible rigors of the environment throughout their lifetime, and the user naturally expects this. This expectation can be evaluated by exposing the device to a set of simulated environmental parameters under controlled laboratory conditions. The severity of these conditions is often increased to achieve meaningful results in a relatively short period of time.
To enable evaluation and comparison of the response of optical devices to appropriate environmental conditions, ISO 9022 details a series of laboratory tests that reliably simulate a variety of different environments. The tests are largely based on IEC standards and have been modified where necessary to take into account optical device-specific features.
