Thermal Shock Test (Air Type / Liquid Type)

Thermal shock means that a product or material produces a large amount of heat exchange in a short time due to rapid heating or cooling. When the temperature changes drastically, the product or material produces a thermal shock. When a metal material undergoes rapid heating and cooling, a large temperature difference is created inside it, causing a large effect on thermal stress. A large thermal shock can exceed the yield limit of the material and creates thermal stress that will damage metal parts.

A thermal shock chamber is a kind of structural material or composite material that can be tolerated in a continuous environment at extremely high temperature and extremely low temperature at a time, which can be caused by thermal expansion and contraction in the shortest time.

There are two main ways to achieve thermal shock:

  • Dual zone thermal shock test chamber: This test chamber has separate high temperature zone and low temperature zone. These areas are filled with silicone oil and the sample is placed in a hanging basket, causing the basket to move from the high temperature zone to the low temperature zone. The movement of the region provides the effect of hot and cold shocks.
  • Three-zone thermal shock test chamber: This test chamber has separate high temperature zone, normal temperature zone and low temperature zone. During testing, the sample is kept in the normal temperature area, but the effect of cold and hot shock is achieved by opening and closing the damper in the high temperature area and the normal temperature area, followed by the low temperature area and the normal temperature area.

The ability to withstand sudden temperature changes is an important property for products and components that are subject to harsh environmental conditions or used in other harsh applications. The thermal shock test is at the most severe end of the scale in the group of temperature tests. Thermal shock refers to a very high rate of temperature change, typically 30 degrees per minute or higher, and is suitable for testing demanding packaging, aircraft parts, military hardware, or electronics. Since almost all products are subject to shipping, this test is suitable for any part that must withstand a sudden change in temperature within a short period of time, such as in transit from a warm warehouse to a cold area.

Numerous products and materials are subjected to air-to-air thermal shock testing, where they move from one extreme atmospheric temperature to another by mechanical means. Fully enclosed thermal shock test chambers prevent unwanted exposure to ambient temperature and help prevent handling hazards.

The thermal shock test is performed in different modes as air type and liquid type. In addition to air-to-air thermal shock testing, several other methodologies are available to meet the needs of specific products and devices. For example, for higher thermal transfer of higher thermal energy, a liquid-to-liquid system is used. This process works essentially the same as air-to-air thermal shock, which uses a basket to mechanically transfer the test sample from one vessel to another.

As a special type of thermal shock, cryogenic tests are also performed for launch vehicles, satellites and related equipment. Different setups are available for tests that require simple atmospheric or high pressure freezing temperature shock.
