HALT and HASS Tests

Highly Accelerated Life Test (HALT), Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS) and Accelerated Decomposition are three methods used to identify possible problems that your products may encounter throughout their lifetime. These methods are conceptually similar to fatigue testing as they try to wear test materials or products at high speeds.

Accelerated Life Test (HALT)

HALT Test, also known as the High Accelerated Life Test, is a technique designed to discover the weak connections of a product. Using the two most common test stimuli, temperature and vibration, it can speed up failure modes faster than traditional test approaches. Instead of applying low stress levels over long periods of time, the HALT test applies high stress levels for short periods beyond the expected area environment. It uses an incremental step stress approach that increases variables until abnormalities occur. Since the HALT test is designed to speed up failures, it is not a pass / fail test and requires root cause analysis and corrective action to obtain the optimum value from the test. It creates the ability to learn more about the product's design and material limitations, and offers opportunities to continually improve the design before placing the product on the market. Since most items are only as good as their weakest rings, the test should be repeated to systematically improve the overall strength of the product.

A typical HALT test program includes five separate tests:

  • High temperature step voltage
  • Low temperature step voltage
  • Vibration step voltage
  • Fast thermal cycle
  • United Environment

Each test has a specific purpose. This results in material degradation (cracking, blistering, distortion, melting, etc.) as a result of cold and hot environments, better understanding of mechanical problems (breaking, breaking and loosening of samples) or potential electrical problems (wear, discontinuities), or electrical performance change. there may be changes.

Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS)

The HALT test is typically used during the design or development stages of a product life cycle. The HASS test is somewhat different because its purpose is to speed up the discovery of hidden defects in manufacturing during the production stages of a product life cycle to reduce associated breakdowns. The HASS process uses equipment similar to the HALT process and the development of an available HASS profile requires other HALT results, as well as other data and related validation information. In addition to detecting defects in existing products, the HASS test can also determine the impact of alternative ingredients on your product design and durability.

Accelerated Weathering

Accelerated weather conditions is a type of accelerated life test that produces the type of damage caused by sunlight and weather conditions within a compressed time. Typically, accelerated weathering tests will cycle between intense UV and moisture exposure at controlled temperatures to achieve this result. These tests are often used to test the designs of equipment designed for outdoor applications to predict how they will withstand the weather throughout their lives.
