The primary purpose of water tests is to verify the ability of enclosures, covers and seals to keep components and equipment in good working condition after a standard drop area or immersion in water and as needed. These tests are not corrosion tests and cannot be evaluated and used as such. Built-in water tests in other standards are not intended to simulate natural precipitation and their stated intensities are too high to be adopted for this purpose.
Therefore, in addition to high-intensity intensities, the R test includes an artificial rain test that is based on natural conditions but does not take into account the high wind speeds often associated with natural rain. Guidance is given about the applicability of the tests and the severity to be selected.
