IEC/EN 60068-2-64 Environmental Tests – Part 2-64: Tests – Test Fh: Vibration, Random Broadband and Guidance

The IEC/EN 60068-2-64 standard deals with structural integrity. The scope of this transit test standard indicates the equipment's ability to resist dynamic loads under random vibration. Functional or structural integrity of the units meeting the test requirement is unacceptable or does not deteriorate.

IEC/EN 60068-2-64 Environmental Tests – Part 2-64: Tests – Test Fh: Vibration, Random Broadband and Guidance

Broadband random vibration can be used to identify a range of topics. These problems include accumulated stress effects and the resulting mechanical weakness. Another problem could be a drop in the unit's specified performance.

The IEC/EN 60068-2-64 pass test is valid for samples that may be subjected to stochastic vibration. This vibration can be caused by shipping or working environments. For example, in airplanes, spacecraft and land vehicles.

The methods and techniques in this standard are based on digital control of random vibration. Allows entering variations to suit individual cases, if prescribed by the relevant specification. Compared to most other tests, this test is based on statistical techniques, not deterministic. Therefore, the broadband random vibration test is explained in terms of probability and statistical averages.

It is emphasized that random tests always require certain engineering judgment, and that both the supplier and the purchaser should be fully aware of this fact. The author of the specification is expected to select the test procedure and the severity values appropriate for the sample and its use. The test method is based primarily on the use of an electrodynamic or a servo-hydraulic vibration generator with an associated computer-based control system used as a vibration test system.

This conformity test standard is primarily designed for unpackaged samples. The latter is also designed for items in the shipping container, when it can be considered as part of itself, for example. However, if the product is packaged, the product itself is called a product. In this case, the product and its packaging are called a test sample together.

Some examples may be subject to vibration of a combination of random and other forces. These may result from transportation or real-life settings. Examples include aircraft, spacecraft, and goods in shipping containers. In these cases, pure random testing may not be sufficient.

The IEC/EN 60068-2-64 compliance test follows a specific test sequence. This series is as follows:

  • First vibration response survey
  • Low level excitation for synchronization before proceeding to full level test in continuous mode
  • Random vibration test
  • Final vibration response research, if prescribed
