ISO 554 Standard Atmospheres for Conditioning or Testing

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 554 testing. This International Standard specifies three standard atmospheres for conditioning or testing that do not differ much from ordinary ambient conditions.

ISO 554 Standard Atmospheres for Conditioning or Testing

The purpose of this standard is to ensure that measurements of properties that can be affected by the atmosphere are made under consistent conditions so that they are repeatable.

The ideal would be to determine a single atmosphere for conditioning or testing, but this simple solution has not been possible due to the diversity of climates and the difficulty of generating tables of values reduced to this single standard atmosphere from the test results. Various tests or conditioning have previously been achieved under atmospheric conditions.

However, in the application of this International Standard, it is desirable that every effort be made to use a single atmosphere selected from those given in this International Standard.

This standard defines the following two types of atmospheres:

  • Standard Atmospheres for Conditioning: Atmospheres in which materials or products are conditioned prior to testing. Conditioning in this context means bringing the material to a stable state in terms of temperature and humidity.

The standard specifies three types of conditioning atmospheres:

  1. Normal atmospheric conditions for testing: 23 degrees Celsius and 50% relative humidity.
  2. A standard atmosphere for extreme temperature conditioning: 27 degrees Celsius and 65% relative humidity.
  3. A standard atmosphere for extreme humidity conditioning: 20 degrees Celsius temperature and 65% relative humidity.
  • Standard Atmospheres for Testing: The atmospheres in which materials or products are tested. The standard atmosphere for testing is the same as normal atmospheric conditions for conditioning, ie 23 degrees Celsius temperature and 50% relative humidity.
