This is a colorimetric version of the DPD method (4500-Cl F) and is based on the same principles. As with the titrimetric method, a colorimetric procedure is used instead of titration with a standard ferrous ammonium sulfate (FAS) solution.
This DPD method is operationally simpler than amperometric titration to determine free chlorine in water. Procedures for estimating individual mono and dichloramine and combined fractions are given. It is used for total chlorine in samples containing significant amounts of organic matter.

Chlorine is not stable in aqueous solutions and the chlorine content decreases rapidly, especially in weak solutions. Protect samples from light and shaking, as exposure to sunlight or other strong light or agitation will accelerate chlorine degradation.
