Hail Effect Test

Environmental Tests

Hail Effect Test

The hail tests can be carried out using open ice, stone and aluminum bullets up to two inches in diameter, firing at 741 mph (331.4m / s, 1087.4 f / s) per hour. Hail is an extremely destructive force, especially for aircraft, with effects of more than 600 mph. Typical test programs include aircraft windshields, antennas, radomes, wheels, and brake pads. Using a highly accurate laser-equipped system, repeatable effects can be achieved within a quarter-inch of the desired target.

In addition, testing can be done at various temperatures. Some specifications require -20 degrees Celsius, but temperatures well below this requirement are also possible in the lab. Failure and fracture analysis as well as high speed video recording allows you to fully evaluate the performance of your product.

Industry Applications

The hail test is an important part of an overall environmental testing program for QA and legal regulations. Any product exposed to the elements should be tested to some extent full, but the process is especially important to maintain compliance with the following regulatory standards:

  • ASTM F320 detailing acceptable full impact testing standards for windshields used in aerospace applications
  • Outline hail test guidelines for solar collector covers and other ground based commercial equipment ASTM E822
  • ASTM E1038 covering hail test requirements for photovoltaic cells
  • FM 4470 and 4473, which set standards for the full resistance of roofing materials

To ensure full testing in these standards, EUROLAB engineers mount your component in a customized luminaire. This allows us to adjust the angle of impact to simulate different types of hail conditions and ensure that your product provides consistent resistance in any situation. We use advanced monitoring and data collection tools, including high-speed cameras, to measure hail pellet effects and accurately assess damage at different speeds. Our engineers have significant experience in designing a custom hail test protocol to meet the needs of various components.

Commercial Full Test

The full moon is estimated to damage millions of pounds of outdoor structures and equipment each year. As one of the most common and potentially damaging environmental forces, the full test for any product used outdoors, regardless of your legal obligations, should be done as part of the QA process. The hail test can be an important selling point for customers looking for a durable, flexible product that can stand in all conditions. A one-time investment in hail product testing will not only result in a more marketable end product, but it can also help you set warranty terms and avoid potential liability issues.

Hail is just one of many environmental factors that we can simulate in EUROLAB. We also provide wind and rain, salt fog, solar radiation, temperature / humidity and other tests. Environmental testing early in the product development cycle can bring your item to market faster and help you avoid expensive last-minute design changes.
