EN ISO 14592-1 Water Quality - Evaluation of Aerobic Biodegradability of Organic Compounds at Low Concentrations

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of EN ISO 14592-1 testing. EN ISO 14592-1 specifies a test method for assessing the biodegradability of organic test compounds by aerobic microorganisms in surface waters by shake flask batch testing with suspended biomass.

EN ISO 14592-1 Water Quality - Evaluation of Aerobic Biodegradability of Organic Compounds at Low Concentrations

EN ISO 14592-1 is applicable to organic test compounds present in lower concentrations (normally below 100 micrograms per liter) than the natural carbon substrates present in the system. Under these conditions, the test compounds serve as a secondary substrate and biodegradation kinetics are expected to be first-order (non-growth kinetics). This test method is not recommended for use as evidence of ultimate biodegradation, which can be better evaluated using other standard tests. It is also not applicable to studies on metabolite formation and accumulation that require higher test concentrations.

This test is specifically designed to provide information on the biodegradation behavior and kinetics of test compounds present at low concentrations, i.e., at concentrations low enough that they simulate the biodegradation kinetics expected to occur in natural environmental systems.

Before performing this test, it is necessary to have knowledge of the biodegradability behavior of the test compound at higher concentrations (e.g. in standard biodegradation tests) and, if possible, the abiotic degradability or elimination from water, as well as the relevant physico-chemical properties. This information is necessary for proper experimental planning and interpretation of results.

When this test method is used with a single environmental surface water sample (with or without added sediment), the laboratory-derived first-order biodegradation rate can be estimated for a single point in time and space. The test system can be more consistent and provide more reliable biodegradation results if specifically adapted to the test compound at a maintained concentration. This can be accomplished using the optional semi-continuous procedure variant of the method.
