EN ISO 14592-2 specifies a method to evaluate the biodegradability of organic test compounds by aerobic microorganisms in natural waters by means of a biomass-dependent continuous-flow river model.
EN ISO 14592-2 is applicable to organic test compounds present in concentrations lower than the natural carbon substrates present in the system. Under these conditions, the test compounds serve as a secondary substrate and biodegradation kinetics are expected to be first-order (non-growth kinetics).
EN ISO 14592-2 is applicable to non-volatile, organic test compounds from aqueous solution that are soluble in water under the test conditions and at the selected test concentration, can be detected quantitatively by appropriate analytical methods, or are present in radiolabeled form. It is not significantly adsorbed, is not photolyzed and is not inhibitory to microorganisms in the test system.
This test is not recommended for use as evidence of ultimate biodegradability (mineralization), which can be better evaluated using other standard tests.
