ISO 22088-4 Plastics - Determination of Resistance to Environmental Stress Cracking (ESC) - Part 4: Ball or Pin Stamping Method

Developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), this part of the ISO 22088 standard specifies a ball or pin pressing method for determining the environmental stress cracking (ESC) behavior of plastics through a constant strain test.

The method can be applied to finished products and test specimens prepared by molding or machining, and can be used to determine ESC as well as evaluate the ESC behavior of a plastic product or material exposed to different environments. The behavior of different plastic materials exposed to a certain environment is controlled.

Alternative methods for determining environmental stress cracking via constant strain testing are specified in ISO 22088-3 and ISO 22088-5. A method for determining environmental stress cracking by constant stress testing is specified in ISO 22088-2.

Ball and pin pressing methods are both fast and sensitive procedures for evaluating the ESC behavior of plastics. The methods are well suited for amorphous plastics. They are less suitable for materials with a pronounced tendency to creep and/or stress relaxation, ie semi-crystalline materials. If semi-crystalline materials are tested, pins are more suitable than balls.

The ball press method is useful for evaluating the basic ESC behavior of the material/chemical combination in question. It is less affected by the near-surface orientation of the samples, the pin pressing method, and the methods in other parts of this International Standard, where the chemical only attacks the original surface of the material. This can show a significant degree of orientation, depending on the sample preparation.

The pin press method is useful for testing small thickness samples and finished parts.
