EN ISO 4892-2 Aging Tests

The ISO 4892-2 standard is a test method that specifies the methods of exposing samples to xenon arc light to create climatic conditions (temperature, humidity and/or wetting) that occur when materials are exposed to sunlight in real end-use environments or to light in real end-use environments. .

EN ISO 4892-2 Aging Tests

ISO 4892-2 shows various methods of showing the effects of corrosion of plastic components through the use of UV testing. This norm is equivalent to ASTM G155 and is based on the use of xenon-arc light sources. EUROLAB offers ISO 4892-2 testing as part of its coating testing services. ISO 4892 specifies methods of exposing samples to laboratory light sources with the addition of humidity, rain, temperature to simulate the conditions they are expected to withstand in real-life practice.

ISO 4892-2 is a standard that specifies test conditions that replicate the effects of weathering on plastic materials through the use of moisture and xenon arc light. Although it is ISO 4892-3, it is very similar to this method and differs significantly in that it uses UV fluorescent lights as the lighting source.

The focus of ISO 4892-2 is the nature of the light used and all the conditions that must be met in accelerated aging. In fact, by using suitable filters, it is possible to reproduce the characteristics of daylight passing through a glass window or exposed to direct sunlight. In fact, by combining the effects of these filters with apparatus conditions, it is possible to simulate end-use conditions to have a better assessment of the material's performance over time.

ISO 4892-2 exposes samples to xenon arc light. This test can be done using outdoor filters or indoor window glass filters depending on your requirements with the various cycle options offered.

Finally, as outlined in our UV testing eBook, Xenon arc light exposure is primarily used to evaluate product aesthetics, because the light source has an emission spectrum that matches a portion of the solar spectrum that causes color fading.

When performing an ISO 4892-2 test procedure, the main factors that play a role in the evaluation are:

  • Type of light filter
  • Timing of exposure time
  • Irradiation level
  • Temperature and relative humidity inside the cabinet
