In the color industry, color differences are increasingly explained through color coordinates. Since these coordinates that describe the magnitude of the perceived color difference between two samples (for example, between a color target and a color match) are not derived from the Euclidean distance in the standard colorimetric system, various empirical color distance formulas have been developed over the years.
This standard defines a method for calculating the color coordinates of an approximately uniform CIE 1976 color space. It forms the basis of the X, Y, Z tristimulus values of the visually non-uniform color space defined by the standard colorimetric system. It also explains how color differences, particularly object colors, can be quantitatively described using color difference formulas. Such differences occur, for example, when colored products are affected by chemical or physical factors, when colors match, or when a product has a non-uniform color. Identifying color differences can form the basis of agreed color tolerances.
The color difference formulas given here will be used specifically for object colors. However, the formulas do not uniformly evaluate small differences in various areas of the color space, ie color differences perceived as visually identical may have correspondingly different CIELAB differences. Improved formulas that more accurately define the coordinates of the CIELAB color space are given, for example, in DIN 6176 or in CIE 15 "Colorimetry"; These formulas were developed for the standard illuminator D65.
