IEC EN 60068-2-67 provides a standardized test procedure for the accelerated assessment of the resistance of small electrotechnical products, particularly non-hermetically sealed components, to the detrimental effects of moist heat. The purpose of the test is not to evaluate external influences such as corrosion and deformation.
In this test, the sample is subjected to very high levels of unsaturated moist heat for a relatively long period of time. Electrical bias is usually applied. The test provides a range of preferred times at 85% RH and 85°C. In the case of plastic-encapsulated components, deterioration is caused by water vapor being absorbed by the plastic and moisture penetrating through the terminals.
The sample should not be exposed to heat radiated from heaters or the chamber wall. If required by the relevant specification, a special mounting structure will be used. The thermal conductivity and thermal capacity of mounting fixtures must be low enough to allow for all practical purposes to thermally isolate the sample. Care should be taken in the selection of mounting structure and mounting fixture materials to minimize the effects of contamination and minimize degradation from corrosion and other mechanisms.
Accelerating the penetration of water vapor into the sample is the most important physical factor in the accelerated moist heat experiment. The acceleration is due to the partial water vapor pressure difference between the inside of a hermetically sealed sample and the test medium.
