ISO 9022-17 specifies methods for environmental testing of optical instruments, including additional assemblies from other fields (e.g. mechanical, chemical and electronic devices) under equivalent conditions, for their ability to resist combined contamination and the influence of sunlight.
“Contamination” as used in ISO 9022-17 means contact of optical instruments with corrosive chemicals (hereinafter referred to as test substances).
However, complete tools or assemblies are not tested according to ISO 9022-17 except for special reasons (see ISO 9022-12). As a rule, representative substrates are used as samples.
The tests described in ISO 9022-17 are designed for the selection of materials and components for devices likely to be exposed to combined contamination and solar radiation throughout their service life, rather than for regular production control.
The purpose of the test is to investigate the resistance of a device, and in particular device surfaces, coatings or synthetic materials, to short-term exposure to test substances combined with solar radiation.
To enable evaluation and comparison of the response of optical devices to appropriate environmental conditions, ISO 9022 details a series of laboratory tests that reliably simulate a variety of different environments. The tests are largely based on IEC standards and have been modified where necessary to take into account optical device-specific features.
