NSF-ANSI 49 Biosafety Cabinets Design and Performance

Biosafety cabinets (BSCs) are divided into three classes. The higher the class, the higher the protection afforded to personnel, products and the surrounding environment from the various hazards that can arise when working with pathogenic agents.

Classified as Class I, the biosafety cabinet provides personnel and environmental protection, but not product protection. Class III biosafety cabinets are designed to operate with highly infectious microbiological agents and similar hazardous processes, thus providing maximum protection for the environment and worker.

NSF/ANSI 49, an American National Standard, applies to class II or laminar flow biosafety cabinets designed to minimize natural hazards when working with agents assigned to biosafety levels 1, 2, 3 or 4.
