Solar Radiation Test

Prolonged exposure to the sun can damage equipment stored or used outdoors. EUROLAB has state-of-the-art solar radiation testing facilities that can test for various product types according to solar standards. It uses special radiation sources to provide spectral content and radiation to the rigorous conditions specified in these standards, and can also simulate the precise temperatures and wind speeds required by these standards.

With the ability to fulfill test requests for devices of any size or configuration, we can help you achieve compliance and certification with MIL-STD-810 and other legal standards. Materials that can be tested include:

  • Glass and transparent armor
  • Carbon fiber and Kevlar products
  • Plastics and elastomers
  • Electric and electronic components
  • Portable communication equipment
  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and control equipment
  • Alternative power cells and other equipment

In short, any military or other device exposed to sunlight is a candidate for solar radiation testing. Understanding the possible effects of UV-A, UV-B, infrared and visible light on a product is key to reducing risk and developing more flexible systems in general.

Sun Test

There are two main types of solar radiation tests:

  • Heating tests: As the name implies, heating tests measure the effect of prolonged exposure to heat on product materials. Monitoring and measuring how these materials expand or break down in realistic climatic conditions allows you to apply certain controls and develop safer products. The solar radiation test is the preferred method for this type of heat test, as it generates a maximum response temperature that describes the differential effects of solar radiation. We have a 4 inch x 6 inch irradiated area that can be precisely calibrated to produce a wide wavelength range and temperature.
  • Actinic effects tests: Actinic effect tests are a special type of test that measures the effects of prolonged exposure to sunlight on a product or ingredient. Our facility is specially equipped to repeat these effects in less time. This is done in a irradiated area equipped with an air or water-cooled system to prevent mercury added metal halide lamps and the tester from exceeding the highest temperatures.

EUROLAB's solar radiation testing facilities offer a number of important advantages, such as improved control of test parameters and the ability to use larger devices and direct them to the radiation source. We also provide real-time monitoring of spectral content and radiation, so you can be sure that all tests are done to your exact specifications.
