This standard provides test methods applicable to surface mount devices made of glass or sintered materials, such as ferrite-containing capacitors, resistors, and inductors.
Two test methods are available: Body strength and impact shock. The purpose of both tests is to evaluate the mechanical stresses applied to the SMDs during and after assembly; these tests look at different mechanical stresses. The relevant component specification should specify which test method or methods may be applied.
This test evaluates the resistance of the SMD body to external static forces applied during assembly in the direction perpendicular to the printed board in which the SMDs are mounted. This test simulates the static force applied to the SMDs during picking and centering in an insertion operation with a very slow speed assembly machine where the forces are essentially static in nature.
A static force can have a different effect on a device than a dynamic force, whose effects can be evaluated by a test separately described as the impact shock test. This simulates the mechanical stress applied to the SMDs during and after the SMDs are mounted on a printed board. This test will be specified in the relevant detail specification.
This test evaluates the physical resistance of SMDs to impact shock. This test simulates the dynamic forces applied by picking and placing tools on a high-speed assembly machine. The effect of a dynamic force on a device may differ from the effect of a static force. This test will be specified in the relevant detail specification.
