Analysis of ISO 13794 Asbestos Fibers

EUROLAB Laboratory provides accredited testing services with ISO 13794 Ambient air - Determination of asbestos fibers - Indirect transmission transmission electron microscopy method. Specifies a reference method using transmission electron microscopy for the determination of airborne asbestos fibers and structures in tests in a wide variety of ambient air conditions, including the interior atmospheres of buildings, and for a detailed assessment of asbestos structures in any atmosphere. The sample preparation procedure involves the ashing and dispersion of the collected particulate so that all asbestos, including asbestos, originally included in particle aggregates or particles of composite material can be measured. The lengths, widths, and aspect ratios of asbestos fibers and bundles are measured, and these allow the calculation of the total mass concentration of asbestos in air, along with the density of the asbestos type. The method allows the type(s) of asbestos fibers present to be determined.

The method allows the type(s) of asbestos fibers present to be determined. The method cannot distinguish between individual fibers of asbestos and elongated fragments (cleavage fragments and pointed particles) from non-asbestos analogues of the same amphibole mineral.
