ISO 18606 Packaging and Environment - Standard Test Method for Organic Recycling

ISO 18606 specifies packaging procedures and requirements for organic recycling. Packaging is considered recoverable through organic recycling only if all components meet the requirements.

Therefore, packaging is not considered recoverable by organic recycling if only some of the components meet ISO 18606 requirements. However, if the components can be easily separated physically before disposal, the physically separated components can be evaluated separately for organic recycling.

ISO 18606 applies to the organic recycling of used packaging, but does not address regulations regarding the recyclability of any packaged residual product.

ISO 18606 does not provide information on requirements for the biodegradability of used packaging that ends up as garbage in the soil environment, because littering is not considered a recycling option. It also does not apply to biological treatment carried out by homeowners in small facilities.

The following four aspects are addressed for each of the packaging components:

• biodegradation;
• Decomposition during the biological waste treatment process (ie composting);
• Negative effects on the biological process;
• Adverse effects on the quality of the resulting compost, including the presence of highly regulated metals and other environmentally harmful substances.
