The extent to which each of these variables should be controlled is determined by the significance of the variable's effect on the measured characteristic. Therefore, for the measurement of viscosity, refractive index and density, it is important to determine and control the temperature of the test section to much closer limits than those required for conditioning and the test atmosphere.
It is recognized that many data, for example viscosity, flow times and density, have historically been determined at temperatures different from those specified in this International Standard. In order to maintain the validity of such data and because most laboratory instruments (e.g. burettes, pipettes, pycnometers) are not calibrated at 23°C, a certain deviation from this International Standard may be necessary.
In these cases, it is strongly recommended that the physical data also be determined according to the conditions specified in this International Standard, in order to facilitate gradual progress towards general adoption of the standard conditions at a later date.
