ISO 8502-2 Preparation of Steel Substrates Before Application of Paints - Determination of Chloride on Cleaned Surfaces in the Laboratory

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of ISO 8502-2 testing. ISO 8502-2 describes a method for the determination of chloride-containing salts that are readily soluble in water and present on the steel surface.

The method can also be applied to previously coated surfaces. While ISO 8502-2 includes a method for surface washing that can be applied in the field or in the laboratory, various methods are used for chloride analysis.

The ISO 8501, ISO 8502 and ISO 8503 series of International Standards are prepared to provide methods for assessing these factors, while the ISO 8504 series provides guidance on the preparation methods available for cleaning steel surfaces, demonstrating the capabilities of each to achieve a specific standard.

This series of International Standards does not contain recommendations for protective coating systems to be applied to steel surfaces. Although surface quality can have a direct impact on the selection and performance of the protective coating to be applied, it does not contain recommendations on surface quality requirements for specific situations. Such recommendations are also found in other documents, such as national standards and codes of practice.

Each of these International Standards is divided into separate sections in turn. This part of ISO 8502 describes a method for evaluating chloride-containing salts that are readily soluble in water and present on the steel surface. These compounds are almost colorless and are localized at the bottom of the rust pits. If not removed before painting, chemical reactions can cause large deposits of rust that disrupt adhesion between the substrate and the applied protective coating.

Even though salt dissolves easily in water, it is often impossible to completely remove salts from the surface with a simple wash as described in this procedure. Therefore, the method does not determine the total amount of chloride on the surface but gives an indication of the level of cleanliness of the surface. Extending the washing time will remove more of the salt.
