ISO 8502-3 Preparation of Steel Substrates Before Application of Paint and Related Products - Evaluation of Dust on Steel Substrates Prepared for Painting

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of ISO 8502-3 testing. ISO 8502-3 describes a method for evaluating residual dust on cleaned steel surfaces prepared for painting. Provides pictorial ratings to evaluate the average amount of dust. It also provides descriptive classes for evaluating the average size of dust particles.

The method described is a qualitative test useful for a steel surface before cleaning, corresponding to rust grade A, B or C as defined in ISO 8501-1. It can be used as a “pass/fail” test or to provide a permanent record of dust present on the surface.

The painting program requirements of contract documents detailing surface preparation by spray cleaning normally state that all surfaces shall be free of surface contamination including oil, grease, dirt, dust and water-soluble salts.

Dust on blast-cleaned steel surfaces can reduce the adhesion of subsequently applied organic coatings and promote corrosion of blast-cleaned steel surfaces by absorbing moisture. Dust accumulation more naturally occurs on horizontal surfaces, inside pipes, and in structural cavities. Prior to painting, special inspection should be made to ensure that such areas are adequately cleaned and sufficiently dust-free.

Due to the subjective factors involved in the test procedure, the test does not allow an accurate determination of dust remaining on steel surfaces cleaned by blasting. However, it provides very useful information when performed by experienced operators and especially when used to compare the performance of tested surfaces with agreed standard samples.

There are many possible variables in the conditions at sites where testing may be necessary. Agreements between relevant parties should include, where appropriate, the number or frequency of tests, testing locations, and the dates and times when tests will be carried out.
