ISO 8502-5 Preparation of Steel Substrates Before Application of Paint and Related Products - Chloride Measurement on Steel Substrates Prepared for Painting

This part of ISO 8502 describes a field test for the measurement of chloride ions using special detection tubes. With appropriate surface sampling techniques, testing can be applied to steel surfaces before and after cleaning, as well as painted surfaces between coat applications.

Some of the water-soluble chlorides on the test substrate are removed by controlled washing or water immersion. The collected washes are analyzed to determine the chloride ion concentration, indicated by the color change in a detection tube containing silver chromate.

International Standards IS0 8501, IS0 8502 and IS0 8503 are prepared to provide methods for assessing these factors, while IS0 8504 provides guidance on the preparation methods available for cleaning steel surfaces, demonstrating the abilities of each to achieve specified levels of cleanliness.

These International Standards do not contain recommendations for protective coating systems to be applied to steel surfaces. Although surface quality can have a direct impact on the selection and performance of the protective coating to be applied, it does not contain recommendations on surface quality requirements for specific situations. Such recommendations are also found in other documents, such as national standards and codes of practice.
