ISO 9022-14 specifies methods for environmental testing of optical devices, including additional assemblies from other fields (e.g. mechanical, chemical and electronic devices), for their ability to withstand the impact of dew, frost or ice under equivalent conditions.
The purpose of the test is to investigate to what extent the optical, climatic, mechanical, chemical and electrical (including electrostatic) performance properties of the sample are affected by dew, frost or ice.
Exposure to dew, frost or ice is accomplished by a rapid change of environmental conditions in a room or by transferring the sample from a cold room to an air-conditioned room. Device parts that are not exposed to frost or icing conditions during normal use should be protected from exposure to such conditions during testing.
The manufacturer strives to ensure that the devices withstand the possible rigors of the environment throughout their lifetime, and the user naturally expects this. This expectation can be evaluated by exposing the device to a set of simulated environmental parameters under controlled laboratory conditions. The severity of these conditions is often increased to achieve meaningful results in a relatively short period of time.
To enable evaluation and comparison of the response of optical devices to appropriate environmental conditions, ISO 9022 details a series of laboratory tests that reliably simulate a variety of different environments. The tests are largely based on IEC standards and have been modified where necessary to take into account optical device-specific features.
