SM 4500-CL B Iodometric Method Test Standard

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of SM 4500-CL B standard. The iodometric method is suitable for measuring total chlorine concentrations greater than 1 mg/L in natural and treated water. Not valid for estuary or sea waters.

Chlorine will release free iodine from potassium iodide (KI) solutions at pH 8 or below. The liberated iodine is titrated with a standard sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) solution with starch as an indicator.

Oxidized forms of manganese and other oxidizing agents interfere. Reducing agents such as organic sulfides also interfere. Although neutral titration minimizes the inhibitory effect of ferric and nitrite ions, acid titration is preferred as some combined forms of chlorine do not react at pH 7.
