This part of ISO 8573 specifies the gas chromatography test method for determining the content of oil vapor (hydrocarbons with six or more carbon atoms) in compressed air, as well as any organic solvents in the vapor, regardless of the source of the compressed air. Guidelines for the use of chemical indicator tubes as an initial indicator of the presence of oil mist are also provided.
Determination of the amount of oil vapor content in the compressed air system shall be carried out within the following restrictions. The sample will be free from polluting contaminants such as water vapor, oil aerosol, etc. Sampling and analysis of oil mist will be performed using a constant flow rate.
Air flow is normally directed through the test equipment via appropriate in-line valves. These will have been checked to ensure that they do not contribute to the level of pollution that already exists. Particular attention will be paid to the cleanliness of the test equipment and other measures will be taken, such as cleaning the valve and stabilizing it to constant test conditions. Good analytical techniques help increase the confidence level of measurements.
The compressed air system and sampling system must have reached steady state before any measurements are taken and must be kept stationary during the measurement. Readings of two consecutive measurements separated by an interval of at least 20 minutes should not differ more than would be implied by the accuracy of the measurement system.
