EN 61373 Railway Vehicle Equipment Test Standard

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 61373 standard. This standard specifies the requirements for testing equipment components intended for use in railway vehicles that are subsequently exposed to vibrations and shocks due to railway operating conditions.

EN 61373 Railway Vehicle Equipment Test Standard

This International Standard specifies requirements for test items of equipment intended for use in rolling stock which are subsequently subjected to vibration and shock by the nature of the railway operating environment. To ensure that the equipment is of acceptable quality, it must withstand a reasonable period of testing that simulates service conditions over its expected life.

Simulated longevity testing can be performed in a variety of ways, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. These;

Amplification: amplitudes increase and time base decrease,
Time Compression: where amplitude history is retained and time base is reduced (increased frequency),
Decimal: where time slices of historical data are removed when amplitudes are below a certain threshold.

The amplification method is used in this standard and with the publications referred to in clause 2; defines the default test procedure to be followed for vibration test items to be used on rolling stock. However, other standards are available and may be used with prior agreement between the manufacturer and the customer. In such cases, the test certificate according to this standard will not be valid. Where service information is available, tests can be performed. If the levels are lower than those specified in this standard, the equipment is partially certified to this standard.

Although this standard primarily concerns railway vehicles on fixed rail systems, it also has wider use. For other transportation systems, such as pneumatic tires or trolleybuses, where the shock and vibration level is clearly different from those achieved in fixed rail systems, the supplier and customer can agree on test levels at the tender stage. Equipment tested at levels lower than those specified in this standard cannot be fully certified against the requirements of this standard.
