EN 1891 Personal Protective Equipment to Prevent Falls from Height - Low Stretch Kernmantel Ropes

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 1891 standard. The EN 1891 standard covers textile ropes for low-tension rescue and caving in kernmantel construction from 8,5 mm to 16 mm, used by persons in rope access, including all types of work positioning and restraint.

EN 1891 Personal Protective Equipment to Prevent Falls from Height - Low Stretch Kernmantel Ropes

Two types of low stretch kernmantel rope are defined: A and B. The European standard specifies the requirements, tests, marking and information to be provided by the manufacturer, including instructions for use of such low stretch kernmantel ropes.

It is possible that ropes that do not comply with this European standard may also be suitable for the activities described above.

Ropes used for protection during any free climbing activity in rope access, rescue or caving should consider other standards, e.g. EN 892. Dynamic mountaineering rope can also be used for protection during rope access and job positioning.

Rope access, rescue and caving ropes are used in similar ways and therefore require the same characteristics. They are used in combination with ascending, descending and safety devices for job positioning in rope access; reduce or increase casualties during recovery; as a means of ascending, descending and horizontal movement in caving. The properties required are low elongation during normal operating procedure, but the capacity to withstand forces from falling. Some energy absorption of these impact forces is also desirable, the amount usually a compromise with acceptable elongation during normal operating practice.

Type A Ropes

low stretch kernmantel ropes designed for general use by those in rope access, including all types of work positioning and fixing; in rescue and caving

Type B Ropes

Low stretch kernmantel ropes with lower performance than type A ropes that require more care in use

The materials used in the manufacture of low stretch kernmantel ropes will be of pure synthetic fiber. It should be known that the melting point of the materials used in the construction of the sheath and core is greater than 195 °C.

This standard covers low-tensile textile ropes of kernmantel structure, 8,5 mm to 16 mm in diameter, for use by persons in rope access, including all work positioning and restraints; for rescue and caving
