This standard does not cover fixed length safety lanyards that are not integrated into a belt. Fixed-length lacing lanyards that are not integrated into a belt are covered by EN 354.
In cases where the work at height is of short duration or for technical reasons it is not possible to provide a work platform, suitable barriers and other similar measures, prevention of falling from a height can be achieved while performing the relevant work activity correctly.
When manufactured in accordance with this European standard, the equipment is intended to prevent (hold) the user from reaching a position where they could fall, or to hold the user securely at the point of operation in a way that the user can share.
It should be noted that such personal fall protection equipment does not, by design, meet the requirements for fall arrest purposes. It may need to be supported by collective or personal protection against falls from a height. Its safe use in practice depends on the effective training and instruction of the user.
Work positioning belts or seat belts are not suitable if there is a risk of uncontrolled slipping by the user, e.g. When working on a steep roof or on wet or slippery surfaces, the user may be suspended by the belt or subjected to unwanted tension by the belt.
