Energy Absorber, Dynamic Performance (EN 355)

The EN 355 standard, a European standard, describes the properties and test methods of energy absorbers used against falling from height. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN 355 Personal protective equipment - Against falling from height - Energy absorbers.

The standard describes the requirements, test methods, marking, manufacturer's information and packaging properties for energy absorbers. Energy absorbers conforming to this European standard are components of or used with lanyards, tie lines and whole body rope harnesses.

If an employee falls while tied to a 2 meter long textile rope without an energy absorber, the force on the person will be unacceptably high. Therefore, every fall arrest system has to be equipped with an energy absorber to limit the impact force to 6kN.

According to the EN 355 standard, shock-absorbing lanyards intended to be used to connect the attachment point of the whole body harness to a secure anchoring device must contain a shock-absorbing component that gradually stops falls and reduces the force exerted on the person. In the event of a fall, shock absorbers must limit the impact force to a maximum of 6kN.

Shock absorbing ropes are subjected to a drop test to evaluate their ability to stop a fall at the greatest distance while limiting the force to an acceptable range (dynamic performance).

Metallic components used in fall protection equipment are subjected to a neutral salt spray test to determine whether the product offers minimal resistance to environmental corrosion, for example rust. For this purpose, products are subjected to 24 or 48 hours exposure in a closed room filled with a salt-water mist causing corrosion of untreated metals.
