Salt Spray (Mass Loss) (ISO 9227 / ASTM B117)

The ISO 9227 standard has been designed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to describe salt spray (loss of mass) test methods within the scope of corrosion tests of fall protection equipment. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 9227 Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres - Salt spray tests.

On the other hand, the ASTM B117 standard has been developed by the American Test and Material Organization (ASTM) on the same subject. The full name of this standard published in 2016 is as follows: Standard practice for operating salt spray (fog) apparatus.

This standard describes the apparatus, procedures and conditions required to establish and maintain a salt spray (fog) test environment. The list of suitable apparatus that can be used is included in the standard annex. This standard does not include the type of test sample to be used for a particular product, exposure times or interpretation for results. In addition, this standard does not address all security concerns for its use, if any. It is left to the business using this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of legal restrictions prior to use.

The ISO 9227 standard describes the apparatus, reagents and procedure used to test neutral salt spray, acetic acid salt spray and copper accelerated acetic acid salt spray tests for the assessment of corrosion resistance of metallic materials with or without permanent or temporary corrosion protection.
