Hand Protection Equipment Tests

Electrically Insulated Gloves or Cases (ASTM F496, ASTM D120 and ASTM D1051)

The following three basic standards have been designed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) to describe the characteristics and test methods of protective gloves, which occupy an important place among personal protective equipment:

Electrically Insulated Gloves or Cases (ASTM F496, ASTM D120 and ASTM D1051)

  • ASTM F496-20 Standard specification for in-service maintenance of insulating gloves and sleeves
  • ASTM D120-14 Standard specification for rubber insulating gloves
  • ASTM D1051-19 Standard specification for rubber insulation sleeves

Working on live electrical connections is very dangerous. Personnel working on such connections must take precautions to protect themselves from electric shocks and other hazards. The leading precautionary measures are appropriate personal protective equipment. In many electrical accidents, employees are harmed because the wrong type or dysfunctional protection equipment is chosen.

Electrical insulating gloves are an important protection equipment against electrical injuries and deaths. However, these gloves must have been tested for functionality and must be produced in accordance with international standards. Above all, the type of glove should be compatible with the work done by the staff. The voltage of electrical units carried by the personnel is also an important parameter in glove selection.

Electrical insulating gloves are classified in both IEC and ASTM standards according to the level of voltage protection they provide as follows:

  • Class 00: Tested at 500 volts for a maximum use of 2.500 volts
  • Class 0: Tested at 1.000 volts for a maximum use of 5.000 volts
  • Class 1: Tested at 7.500 volts for a maximum use of 10.000 volts
  • Class 2: Tested at 17.000 volts for a maximum use of 20.000 volts
  • Class 3: Tested at 26.500 volts for a maximum use of 30.000 volts
  • Class 4: Tested at 36.000 volts for a maximum use of 40.000 volts

Electrically insulated gloves or covers (ASTM F496, ASTM D120 and AS are used by our organization within the framework of hand protection equipment testing services.TM D1051) testing services are also provided.
