EN 374-4 Protective Gloves Against Chemicals and Microorganisms, Part 4: Determination of Resistance to Chemical Degradation

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 374-4 standard. This European standard specifies the test method for the determination of the resistance of protective glove materials to degradation by hazardous chemicals in continuous contact.

EN 374-4 Protective Gloves Against Chemicals and Microorganisms, Part 4: Determination of Resistance to Chemical Degradation

Other tests used to assess chemical resistance, such as permeation resistance and penetration resistance, may not provide sufficient information about the physical property changes that affect a glove during exposure to a chemical. The outer surface of the glove must be exposed to chemicals.

In order to understand whether a glove material is resistant to the penetration of chemical substances, tests are carried out against specified chemical substances according to the EN 16523-1 standard.

The performance levels achieved determine the type of chemical protective glove defined by the EN 374-1 standard. However, if a glove material achieves a high performance level for permeation resistance, the effect of degradation from chemicals also needs to be considered.

Decomposition is a harmful change in some properties of a material in contact with a chemical. For example, as a result of degradation, flaking, swelling, fragmentation, embrittlement, color change, appearance change, hardening or softening are observed in the material.

Theoretically, although the material exhibits excellent resistance to chemical permeability, it may perform poorly in real-life conditions and degrade the chemical. Deterioration is not evaluated against performance requirements as part of any permeability testing procedure. However, after testing, observations on the appearance of the material are reported.
