The EN 421 standard covers gloves that provide protection to the hand and various parts of the arm and shoulder. This standard also applies to gloves mounted in permanent enclosures. This European standard covers intermediate sheaths used between a glove and a permanent containment environment. However, the requirements of this standard do not apply to protective gloves against X-ray radiation.
According to the EN 421 standard, protection and protective qualities are indicated by pictograms. The EN421 pictogram indicates protection against radioactive particles. The EN421 2 pictogram indicates protection against ionizing radiation.
To protect against radioactive contamination, the protective glove must be liquid-tight and pass the penetration test defined in the EN 374 standard (EN ISO 374 Protective gloves against dangerous chemicals and microorganisms).
In addition, protective gloves used in enclosures must pass an air pressure leak test. These gloves should provide a high level of resistance to water vapor penetration. 1 indicates the highest resistance, 4 indicates the lowest resistance.
Protective glove materials are modeled for their resistance to ozone cracking, but this test is optional and is used as an aid in glove selection. 1 indicates the lowest resistance, 4 the highest resistance.
For protection from ionizing radiation, gloves should contain certain amounts of lead or equivalent metals. The lead equivalent should be marked on each glove with a measurement in millimeters and a description of the test conditions.
